What does the Society Secretary do?
The duties undertaken by the Society’s Secretary are determined by the Committee
of Management (CoM) and include:
- Facilitating secretarial support for the Committee of Management and its sub committees and taking responsibility for arranging meetings, taking
minutes, preparing background papers etc
- Preparing and signing all official notices, accounts, returns and documents in
accordance with statutory requirements and the Society’s rules
- Working with the Chief Executive to generally foster good governance practices
- Convening, attending and minuting Conference, managing statutory paperwork and communicating with branches regarding Conference
- Managing and acting as main contact point for the Society’s Branches, and communicating any concerns or suggestions to the CoM
- Holding meetings of branch officers and keeping Branches informed of the direction
and work of the Society
- Arranging roadshow meetings and reporting feedback to CoM
- Arranging an annual mailshot to members to advertise Branch General Meetings
for the forthcoming year
- Responsibility for communicating with all Society membership, on a frequency
to be determined by the CoM

Although the Secretary is elected by Conference, unlike the CoM, he is paid a

the Secretary can serve until the age of 70.
The CoM and Secretary are supported by Registered Office’s Governance Department.
